Movie Pick Of The Week: Easy Money [READ]

Movie Pick Of The Week: Easy Money
Written By Rula Abirafeh

A bit Traffic, sounds of Babel and following The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo breakthrough, Easy Money is a strangely relatable psychological thriller. At first go you'd think it's segmented stories coming violently together, connected by cocaine. But in end you're left with more than just that high. If you've ever known what it's like to try to fit in, in an all-bearing attempt, then for sure Easy Money will resonate. Easy Money comes full circle, passing an experience on, telling a multi-faceted story, and leaving you wondering which way JW - the main character - really goes.
JW - played by Joel Kinnaman - is full of desperation, longing to do whatever it takes to penetrate the upper crust without suspicion. He rolls with a posh circle, knowing he can’t keep up. Wallflower JW swaps imposter dress shirt buttons for designer: a bit genius and a bit ridiculous. He practices posh mannerisms mirror front, dismissing brains for riches. He oozes conflict, with a competitive insecurity and volatile anger. Swallowing his fear, JW brings his intelligence (which he dismisses frequently) to a dirty and fast smuggling drug ring. Lust desperately leads him down a dark road, completely naive to the emotional intensities ahead. His somewhat hardened façade breaks with turmoil – all he’s got driving him is the girl, and all he knows is money will get him there.
Beyond main character, each actor develops an awesome intimacy with the viewer - you know they're in it for one last go - for family, for love and for the instant cash stability (tempting during these times). A young wannabe entrepreneur, a miscreant brother and son, and an estranged father reconnecting with his baby girl. They equally can't seem to kick the habit, knowing there's nothing else that'll suffice, or that'll be any "easier".

Clearly a Euro-made flick since it has way more depth than action, with succinct dialogue and a lot left unsaid, even a bit of contemplative - Easy Money comes full circle, starting right where it began but with questions unanswered. There’s a lingering deeper ruminating theme amidst the familiar drug, money, action, blood and killing forefront. Don't let that be all you see from this film.

Directed by the talented Daniel Espinosa, Easy Money is much more thought and art than action. Totally recommended – in theatre, at home or on an airplane.
