REVIEW: Drake - Nothing Was The Same

In the past year, young Aubrey "DRAKE" Graham has been recording on the low, building an empire on the low and secretly taking over the game. This past weekend was major including the Mayweather vs Canelo fight on Saturday and another glued-to-my-seat episode of Breaking Bad. Somewhere in between those two events rumors started spreading that iTunes mistakenly made Drake's new album available to purchase. Nobody could confirm until random suspicious possibly photoshopped jpegs started surfacing of the album playing on peoples computers. Sure enough last night (Sunday) conveniently following Breaking Bad, Nothing Was The Same did in fact leak, only it was track by track and the initial source was never identified. At this point "leaking" your album early can only benefit you in the big picture.

I wouldn't be surprised if Drake leaked the project himself, knowing the anticipation of the album was at the highest threat level. Drake's music has always resonated with me deeply due to his intense storytelling and my ability to relate to a twenty something year old. I'm still processing and sorting out the details of Nothing Was The Same, but already having listened to it a dozen times, I can say he doesn't disappoint one damn bit. There's nothing extra I would have wanted out of this album. Perfect production, just the right amount of featured friends and minimal young money support. Of course Drake is Young Money Cash Money Records forever but he did ink an independent label deal with Warner (OVO Sound) and his bff Noah "40" Shebib last year allowing him to be more independent. Since his last album Take Care, Drake moved out to Los Angeles and with that said, Nothing Was The Same.

Tom Ford is the Tuscan Leather Drake is referring to and apparently it smells like a brick. 6 minutes of pure rap. If that isn't rap I don't know what is. One of the keys to making a great album are the transitions it possess. this record has multiple. Can't quote much of the album because if I did I would quote them all and this would turn into a thesis on Nothing Was The Same: A Drake Story. The soul of Whitney Houston can be felt lying in the song sample. It's only right the executive producer of the album, 40 produces the intro.

Furthest Thing is produced by a dude named Hagler possibly Mike, unconfirmed and 40. I call the the actual intro. Tuscan Leather was the pre party before the party started.

Started. So Started From The Bottom produced by Mike Zombie has gone double platinum since it's release back in February. Everything was independent about this song, from the promotion to the video, Drake did it himself. He has grown his cult following by a few million since the last album, which gives him the confidence to stay completely original and try different things. Everything so far has worked. The titles expression has potentially been used from anyone to your local priest to Obama for sure.

Late last week pre-order of Nothing Was The Same became available on iTunes and the song Wu Tang Forever produced by 40, was released with that. Featuring vocals from Wu Tang record It's Yourz, the song is anything but gangsta. The blend of rap into singing does kill though.

I'm wondering how many babies born in the future will be able to say, "yeah I was conceived during the Drake song Own It." Produced by 40 (unconfirmed) Own It is a step in the right direction of slow jams. More storytelling from rapping and singing perspectives.

Did you know that British Columbia spells Behavior (Behaviour)? Well they do and Canadian Drizzy uses it for the next record Worst Behaviour. Also my personal favorite at this time. Apparently Dj Dahi alongside 40, produced this demonic turn up track and it seriously makes my neck hurt. Drake uses his big boy voice in his worst behavior to angrily vent on the track. Wow #INDJDAHIWETRUST.

Some features including Jhene Aiko weren't included on the "official" track list released, but released on the "unofficial track list" last month. Hippy Soul Jhene Aiko ends up on the song From Time. Production orchestrated by 40 and produced by Chilly Gonzalez. Drake and Jhene really sound like they are talking to each other lowkey.

I wasn't a fan of Hold On, We're Going Home when it first released. I can also admit when I am wrong about a record because the song has grown on me heavily in the past couple weeks. Maybe it was bad timing initially, but it stayed strong and found its way into my heart. The song features a newly signed artist to OVO Sound, Majid Jordan and young producer Nineteen85. The song has gone Gold with over 550,000 copies sold and will continue to grow in the anticipation of the album Nothing Was The Same releasing September 24th.

Another strong favorite of mine is Connect produced by Hudson Mohawke. An baseball commentator announcing a homerun (not sure what game or what player). The sound is different and dark and I love it. SWANGIN' is the phrase Drake uses throughout the song. Pure heat.

The one and only Young Money Cash Money feature comes from The Language and it features a ghetto sermon from bossman Bryan "Stunna/Birdman/Baby" Williams. I haven't been able to read between the lines too well, but there are rumors that the first line Drake raps is directed to and is a response to Kendrick Lamar.

Transition to 305 To My City produced by Young Money Cash Money producer Detail. Sounds like an ode the Miami (305), which makes sense this is where the YMCMB compound is stationed. Another song I have trouble reading between the lines.

Drake and super singer Sampha appeared on Jimmy Fallon Late Show to premiere and perform a new song Too Much. Drake also worked with Sampha on another song they released called The Motion. Sampha is best known from his vocals and collaborations with SBTRKT.

The first song to spring a leak last night (leaknight) was Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2 featuring Jay Z. Such a smooth and melodic sample of Ellie Goulding Don't Say A Word, playing in the background. Yes Jay Z has legit bars, but this is why the song transitions to Paris Morton Music 2. Drake won't let Jay Z take the throne on this one. Boi-1da, Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett co produce the song. Paris Morton is supposedly a woman Drake knows.

The album closes with a feel good, top down record called Come Thru. At about 2:20 the song drops in tempo and transitions into a freak nasty vocal seduction. Long time friend Chase N. Cashe gets the opportunity to bless and complete Nothing Was The Same.

All Me produced by Key Wane technically closes the album, it just doesn't fit or make sense in that location. However it is still a club banger with features from 2 Chainz and Big Sean. The original version released included an intro from Aziz Anzari (taken from Funny People) and a transition to a minute outro of Drake rapping.

Drake's third solo album Nothing Was The Same definitely stands tall and in it's own league. He is someone who accepts his individuality and doesn't try and copy what is trending. A motivational and highly inspiring album to say the least. A nationwide tour Would You Like A Tour is starting 2 days before Nothing Was The Same releases. (September 22nd NY) This album is a complete show in itself. I predict  well over 550,000 albums sold first week. I'll leave you with a snapple fact, Drake will appear on Justin Timberlake upcoming sequel to The 20/20 Experience 2 Of 2. Epic.

REVIEW: Popeska @popeskamusic - Sonder EP

Straight outta the ATL, Georgia is not another rapper, rather a 20 year old kid named Ralf who makes and loves music. When he's not being Ralf, he tears up performances and melts brains known as Popeska. Don't believe me, then listen to Kraken from his latest project SONAR below. Popeska just released SONAR EP and is now apparently signed up to play Mad Decent Block Party. It's Friday, tune out and turn up to Popeska.

BRAIDS @braidsmusic New Project Leaks Early "FLOURISH // PERISH" REVIEW'D

BRAIDS is an art rock electronic indie pop band out of Calgary, Alberta. Not doing too many shows at the moment in the states, but look out for them in Los Angeles at Bootleg Bar October 17. BRAIDS new project FLOURISH // PERISH is beautifully sounding with what sounds like influences from many including maybe, thom yorke and a little bjork. A consistent flow throughout the entire album, with standout songs like Amends Fruend and December. Haven't heard a complete album that I could listen to cruising down the southern California coast on a hot day, or during a dark storm filled monday. Unreal sounds and transitions provided by BRAIDS. LEAK ALERT !!! Support the album FLOURISH // PERISH when it releases on August 20.

TRACK BY TRACK REVIEW: Kanye West @kanyewest - #Yeezus

You see there are leaders and followers. Kanye West is a dick not a swallower and his new album Yeezus proves he is still an individual in an industry of followers. Recorded in Paris, New York and Malibu Ca. Kanye West sixth studio album Yeezus isn't his best work, but is most definitely kicking the ass of whatever competition there is left. Not wasting any time I felt obligated to write a review for Yeezus by release date, considering I have listened to the album well over 20 times since its unofficial leak Saturday morning. Sources say Kanye's camp or a member of DONDA purposely leaked this project to cause mass hysteria. DONDA is a creative team that created the album artwork for Yeezus, which portrays a blank cdr inside of a plastic case, with a blank piece of red tape that holds it together. Very simple yet so attractive. Kanye announced that he would be doing no promotion for the album nor presale. A string of impromptu performances including musical guest on Saturday night live and innovative ways to share his music all concluded to today, the release day. What I mean by innovative ways is kanye projecting his music videos throughout the world at premeditated locations. The first to do something like that in music ( correct me if I'm wrong). So Yeezus is a first of its kind in the fact that it was almost entirely produced by Daft Punk. Yes, the duo who brought you Stronger rekindled their flame with Kanye and produced half of Yeezus. The other half is equally as interesting with production from a lot of amazing producers and newcomers like Hudson Mohawke and TNGHT. More of them later. Yeezus opens up with On Sight a Daft Punk produced jam that resembles the classic Stronger at times. Trippy synth manipulation turns into a legit head bumper. GOOD Music member Travi$ Scott and friend/coworker Mike Dean co produce the introduction with interpolations from Holy Name of Mary Choral Family "He'll Give Us What We Really Need". Very different in such a good way. "No sports bra, lets keep it bouncin'".
Black Skinhead arranged by the same production team, Daft Punk, Travi$ Scott and cool guy, Mike Dean was great but not of my taste. A little too political, not enough party. Nevertheless different in a good way.
Track 3 or I Am A God featuring Justin Vernon (Bon Iver frontman) is progressive and political at the same damn time. Production by Daft Punk and new to most Hudson Mohawke give new meaning to hip hop. Screams throughout the song mimic Jesus, as Kanye speaks on talking to God in song. You wouldn't know it, but an all star lineup of producers makes this next song possible. New Slaves was the first piece of the album that was given to the public via projections on walls throughout the world. Daft Punk step out of their comfort zone with this and collaborated with Travi$ Scott, Mike Dean and Kanye himself. This is the first time it seems Kanye has stepped back somewhat from production and found amazing artists to help mold Yeezus. I think Hudson Mohawke is the reason why this song sounds so ridiculously fresh. My opinion of course but if you listen to his team TNGHT self titled EP, which is trap infused you will get an idea of where I'm coming from.
Hold My Liquor is a great record with massive appeal over time. A lot of people say why Chief Keef for the feature? Simply because he fits perfectly for the part on this particular Young Chop classic. Actually Mike Dean, Arca and even Rick Rubin assist with production on Hold My liquor. Justin Vernon adds classic Bon Iver vocals to perfect this song, no retraction. I'm In It is produced by RZA and raunchy as hell. Also Justin Vernon has vocals that make me reminisce of that late 80s/ early 90s vibe. Co production again from Mike Dean and Travi$ Scott. Travi$ Scott will be remembered as a producer not a rapper, then again that's what they said about Kanye. Blood On The Leaves opens with a Nina Simone and progresses alongside Kanye's sung words into a trapped out triumph of trumpets. Similar to New Slaves this record is produced by TNGHT or Hudson Mohawke. If you recognize the epicness of the beat it was featured on a popular Adidas commercial recently. Power producer Symbolyc One produced one of my favorite records on Yeezus called Guilt Trip featuring Kid Cudi. This song is particularly ironic since Kid Cudi left Good Music earlier this year. Also the fact that Cudi repeatedly only sings " If you loved me so much then why'd you let me go". Ironic right? New to my ear are co production by Arca and AckeeJuice. Rockers. Mike Dean and Travi$ Scott were clearly in the room at every studio session, but it was a good choice whatever their specific contribution was. Traces of a Blocka Remix sample are found if you listen. Send It Up features Chicago local King L and Iamsu!(California artist) with new sounds from Gessafelstein, a French DJ that adds new perspective to the album. Interesting sounds fill this record in particular. Maybe it's due partially to co producers Daft Punk, Arca and Hudson Mohawke. A dope visual for this would be nice. I have read that Bound 2 is the greatest record of all time from the album. Though Charlie Wilson's haunting singing sooths the mind, I wish there were more elements to it.this record honestly scares the shit out of me thanks to samples from the Ponderosa Twins Plus One. Yeezus is ahead of it's time and will flourish. Like wine, it will get much better with time. 10 songs is the exact perfect length for any person to stand. Like I said I easily listened to the album 20 times over this past weekend with friends. Good times and good tunes. Or could this be some sick game like Justin Timberlake announcing a part 2 to The 20/20 Experience? whatever the outcome I'm there for the ride. Oh yeah and Late Registration will forever be my all time favorite Kanye West album.

Buy the album out now.

REVIEW: The Great Gatsby Movie + Soundtrack #thegreatgatsby

Having slept through my english class all semester in high school, I can honestly say this past weekend was my first time ever really hearing of the classic american novel The Great Gatsby. I have not read the book yet, but was able to see the newly renovated movie The Great Gatsby in theaters this past weekend. I went in with no expectations and came out entertained and inspired to write this review. I do plan on seeing the original masterpiece film written by F. Scott Fitzgerald soon. Everything was almost perfect about The Great Gatsby movie in my eyes, almost too perfect. Thanks to a massive CGI budget this movie was able to seem perfect in every way. The rich color and resonating scenic portraits were amazing. Baz Luhrmann  who was also known for the burlesque remake of Moulin Rouge as well as the righteous rendition of Romeo & Juliet also starring Leonardo Dicaprio, directed and produced. His visions were both dark and intriguing for the duration of the film. Tobey Maguire redeemed himself as an actor with his role as Nick Carraway. Leonardo Dicaprio stole the show as his perfectly performed character Jay Gatsby. Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan) and Joel Edgerton (Tom) both had standout performances as well.
The story isn't what drew me in and caught my attention. It was the Jay Z executive produced soundtrack on Interscope Records that consumed me. Jay Z made another power move with this one, acting as a behind the scenes figure when in reality he the one getting the most buzz from The Great Gatsby. I have to admit, there are times during the movie where the music felt forced and meant for marketing purposes only. An example would be a classy 20's remake of Beyonce's Crazy In Love. Although it does have that classic vibe, it was a wrong choice through my ears. No Church In The Wild got it's five minutes of fame during the movie, but also seemed like another commercial use only song. As for the rest of the album, I have not stopped listening to it. Jay Z did a good job of compiling the right artists and records for this Original Soundtrack. Songs that really stand out to me from The Great Gatsby Soundtrack are; Florence + The Machine "Over The Love (Of You)", Nero "Into The Past", The xx "Together" and what seems to be the theme song by Lana Del Rey "Young and Beautiful." These songs are perfectly scored and executed during The Great Gatsby. Gotye Heart's A Mess has multiple plays in my iTunes as well. $100 Bill performed by Jay Z himself bangs, but don't his song usually almost everytime bang hard? Go see the movie, then go see it again, but first listen to The Great Gatsby Original Soundtrack.

#Brokechella Review + Interviews With Nold x Korova x yOya

Southern California's biggest and now most commercial music & arts festival Coachella just passed. For those who couldn't make it down to Indio or afford the pricey $350+ passes, there was another newly discovered festival. Brokechella means what it says. The event caters to a much smaller scale and more inexpensive Coachella, but for only one day. Brokechella provided 3 stages with over 30 bands and artists with many extra activities. Lot's to do in such little time. I had the opportunity to interview some of the performers including NOLD, Korova and yOya. Next year is sure to outdo this year’s Brokechella.

Exclusive Interviews

NOLD

What does NOLD stand for?

I got it as a nickname at the beginning of high school. My name is Arnold so my buddies started calling me NOLD. Then I started dj'ing when I got to school and it was kind of a logical progression to kind of go with that name. I'm stuck with it now.

You were born in Russia, but have since moved out here to California.

So my family is from Germany, but my mom was going to school in Russia when I was born. Stayed there for about 6 months and eventually moved back to Germany. I then moved to LA when I was 6. I definitely still go back home though.

What is the music scene like in Germany compared to Hollywood?
It's a lot different. I still love drawing influence from my original roots. I lived in Berlin my freshman year of high school. It was crazy picking up all sorts of different techno music and going into different clubs. I won't necessarily play these types of records, but I take that little bit of inspiration from it.

Who are your influences?

Real early I was listening to Arman Van Helden. I also listened to the real ghetto shit as well as being a 'House Head'. I was really into House music. My cousins were all older than me so they would take me out to clubs and introduced me to the music. I started getting into 128-130 House music in Europe, which was kind of the beginning of my musical process.

How do you keep a crowd entertained?

Now a day’s people usually go to a club to see 1 particular artist or their friend told them to go. I grew up listening to the radio and Top 40's hits, so I kind of blend in the new stuff that I listen to with the older hits from back in the day that people will recognize. I get on the mic a lot; I'm trying to limit that down. Being in a club and being a dj is about being a part of the party not the center of the party.

How are you preparing for your performance here at Brokechella?

Usually before I go on stage I will maybe thirty minutes before look over songs on my computer and just kind of make sure I'm comfortable with the things I'm playing. A lot of times I will feel out the dj's that play before me. I'm always changing and adding songs depending on the other dj sets. I usually try to keep it real mellow. It's crazy people start partying around you, but I don't know, maybe I'll talk to my girlfriend 5 minutes before showtime. I like silence.

What can fans look forward from you coming up this year?

I'm getting ready to put out my first EP this summer. I have been dj'ing and performing for a while. Ever since joining Shifty Rhythms I've kind of taken the production side a little more serious. More shows in the LA area and more Shifty Rhythms parties

Korova

What is Korova significant to?

It's what I have always released music under starting like 3 years ago. It's a name I have grown up with. I chose it from Clockwork Orange the movie. My brothers showed me it at a really young age. I was born in raised in Utah, so I'm from a really strange background compared to most LA kids.

When did you make your way to Los Angeles?

4 years ago. I was a junior in high school. Family, location and school were the main reason.

Have you always been into music?

Yeah definitely. I was in band and as I grew older I started making hip hop beats for my brother. I've been making music for like twelve years, but seriously as Korova for 3. I also make music with an indie band called Breakfast and we just played SXSW. I work for Teamwork too, the management company for Diplo and ATrak. So it's a good balance of life at this point.

Shifty Rhythms is a collective your apart of?

Yeah. It's about events and curating artists and people doing music. Neo Fresco, the commander in chief brought me on. He's kind of like my big brother.

You have been referred to as an electronic dance scientist. What are the main ingredients used to make a masterpiece mix?

Wow. That's very poetic...You just have to have a story to tell ultimately. There's no point to make music unless there is a purpose. Life experiences, memories, nostalgia, anything that makes you listen to it that is redeemable. I like shit that is more meaningful. I don't know about an electronic dance scientist.

How do you get prepared for a show like today, Brokechella?

Well I haven't touched dj decks for like 2 months so I was a little unfamiliar with the DJM800, but I have been practicing with Shakewell who is a rapper. I'm helping produce his album for the past 2 years now. DJ'ing is easy. It's easy to go on stage and play music you like. That's the easy part.  I'm focusing more on producing.

Fill in the blank. Today's word of the day is?

Hilary Swank. You should praise her and love her. Everything that we do is for Hillary and she is the one that blessed us. Andrew is the intergalactic Swank God. I haven't got my position yet, but its coming.

yOya

How has your day been going today?

It's good. We've actually played at Brokechella 3 times, since it's started. It's cool to see the turnout. Way bigger than it was last year.

Your music is classified as folktronic. Where did that genre come from? How was it created?

There are other bands that consider themselves folktronic, but we don't sound like them. So maybe we shouldn't use that word. Maybe that’s their word. It just makes sense because we were playing folk music with a drummer, but that didn't work out. We then used electronic drums so it kind of found its own sound.

In your opinions what makes a great performance?

I feel good about a performance when there is some energy moving back and forth with us and the crowd. You get that feedback to hype each other up. People have also come up to us saying it was a great performance, but we might have felt differently. So it depends a lot of how you feel personally.

Who are you looking forward to seeing tonight?

We're looking forward to seeing Manhattan Murder Mystery. Our friends Body Parts are playing and completely different are Planet Booty. They do this super duper dance set too. It's kind of like MC Hammer meets James Brown.

How are you preparing for tonight's performance?

We usually rehearse before the show, even the entire week before. Sometimes we're too busy to rehearse until day of, like today. Back in the day we used to listen to pre show music like Let Down by Radiohead.
What are your plans for this summer?

We are putting out new music. Our debut album came out in 2010, so we're excited to show people our new stuff. We have been working on this EP a long time and it's going to come out in July. We will be releasing a new single May 7th at the Satellite. Then we go on a weeklong tour up the West Coast and more serious touring when the EP drops.

#Brokechella was a success. See you next year.

REVIEW: Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience Album

All I remember is one second it's new years eve 2012 and the next thing I know, it's Justin Timberlake all over the place in 2013. The new king of pop Justin Timberlake is making a groundbreaking return to music. He now has the whole wide world in his hands and is ready to release his forthcoming solo album The 20/20 Experience. The entire album is once again produced by partner in crime Timothy Timbaland Mosley. Justin has also reached out to upcoming star writers like James Fauntleroy who is co responsible for Suit & Tie as well as Mirrors. Monday afternoon RCA Records and Justin made the full album available for stream when you pre-order the album. In my opinion, this is a huge step forward in the fight against piracy and album leaks. Unfortunately not more than 12 hours later the album did eventually leak.

Pusher Love Girl: The introduction to the album, this record was first introduced back at the Directv superbowl party in New Orleans. For this album, Justin introduces a new house band that will accompany him throughout his tours and performances that go by The Tennessee Kids. Pretty symphony strings set it off, until the beat drops. He also performed the song on The Jimmy Fallon Show last night. The added background vocals and sounds are courtesy of JT and Timbaland I'm sure. They always bouncing crazy new beats and noises off each other.

Suit & Tie: When this song was released, The world became slaves to Justin Timberlake. Besides his fun loving personality and the ability to not ever take himself too seriously, Justin has grown so much from his last album and you can clearly tell when he decided to collaborate with Jay Z on this record. This get together also sparked a mini tour between the two, which includes a stop in Pasadena, Ca at the Rose Bowl.

Don't Hold The Wall: Begins with smooth acappella, but immediately transitions into a sultry sounding club jam. Timbaland is known for the funkiest sounding of sounds, and with this one I think he taps some Bollywood inspiration for the vibe. A similar sounding Justified song comes to mind and when people hear it, they will be reminded why Justin is the greatest at what he does. Another transition twist the track and your left with nothing to do but dance. One thing that makes up for the lack of tracks on the album is the fact that almost all the songs are extended 7 minute pieces of art.
'
Strawberry Bubblegum: An interesting vocal sample, when Justin begins singing it's almost unrecognizable. Like a young Mike Jack, Justin is very versatile with singing and sounds to be possibly mimicking someones idea. No harm done because it is a beautiful song and team work is always needed for greatness. The final transition of the song has you feeling happy, regardless of what else is going on in your life and that's the truth and point.

Tunnel Vision: Another interesting choice of sounds for this song. With a distorted vocal sample and almost euro-dance synths, I have proclaimed Tunnel Vision as my favorite record on the album at the moment. Don't get me wrong, JT's previous album FutureSexLoveSound was brilliant and changed the music game in a lot of ways, but this album has taken it a step further. Not only is it completely relevant to the rest of the industry, but in fact ahead of everybody else once again. This song will do wonders in the club by the way dj's.

Spaceship Coupe: I'm going out on a limb here and calling this one the strip club anthem. The baseline is dirty and compliments the vocals just right. Mark my words, strippers will be on the pole to Spaceship Coupe. At about the 4:30 mark, the song transitions and takes a naughty turn for the best with flipped sex sounds and heavy breathing. Almost positive that isn't Timbaland breathing all hard like that, but I could be wrong.

That Girl: This song was also premiered at the super bowl party. What was first released made people think that the 20/20 Experience will be more sophisticated and even a flop, it was quite the opposite. It is sophisticated, but much more innovative, relevant and progressive I guess I would put it. The chemistry between Justin's soul and Timbalands talented mind is explosive. Anybody listening to this album will be singing all songs including this catchy uptempo soul song for the next month.

Let The Groove Get In: This song first seemed out of place, almost a jazzy, miami nights mix. After the second listen, I have come to learn Let The Groove Get In is a very important piece of this puzzle. I'm not sure what he is planning for this song, but it will be another amazing spectacle when it's revealed. Anybody that likes to have a good time and party will enjoy this song. Very spicy with many dance breaks throughout.

Mirrors: Justin's second single Mirrors is out now and the visual is soon to follow. Don't think What Goes Around similarities, think Timbaland and Justin Timberlake signature sounds. The song transitions and slowly progresses with a funky accappella mix up to 8 minutes.

Blue Ocean Floor: Blue Ocean Floor is another different sounding song that everybody is used to from Justin. Ocean waves lightly crashing in the background and a weird sounding tape deck sample makes up the background sounds as well as a unique vocal sample. James Fauntleroy could have co wrote this one, or I may even go the extent of saying Frank Ocean may have helped out in some way.

Whatever the case is, Justin Timberlake truly lived up to all the hype and critics that expected greatness from The 20/20 Experience. That is exactly what open-minded music lovers will get. It's only March and already Justin has hosted and performed on SNL, crashed iTunes, shut down the Grammy's and now will begin his tour. How could you get tired of this guy. For Gods sake he's an original boy band member turned into one of the greatest artist/musicians of this era. Quote me on that.

Show Review: @HateNylo At @OnTheRox, Hollywood

A Chicago girl at heart, multi talented artist Nylo lives in Los Angeles now and just performed on top of the historical Roxy Theatre in Hollywood. On The Rox is a smaller nightclub and on Saturday 03.08.13@HateNylo brought her A game and stunned the crowd with her short but sweet performance. Backed by a new band from her previous Troubadour performance, Nylo takes the stage a little after 9:50PM. She begins with a smooth and soulful unheard record call You Already Know.

From there Nylo announces to the crowd that they are too far away and must move as close as possible to the stage immediately. That worked in everyone's favor because as soon as she started the next song, the crowd was much more involved. Another beautiful, but unheard gem is performed. The crowd response was positive. Excited oh's and aw's filled the background. Nylo then proceeds to take off her flannel jacket and the show really begins. A previous release Take Me Back begins, which is a bit more upbeat. Next song, Nylo walks to the keyboards, which she is very familiar with and begins to play a familiar song. Rent Free. The crowd picks up on this almost instantly and begins singing along, minus the few drunk attendees merely conversating with each other.

Another new song, co-written by @iamblackbear Decisions is performed. If your wondering what Nylo's debut album will sound like, you get a pretty good idea from the nights performance that it will be innovative and fresh. For a finale, young Nylo closes with the beloved record Someone Like You. She then exits the stage, while the crowd yells encore. 5 minutes go by and no encore. Mysterious, yet tasteful. Nylo debut album coming this year.

REVIEW: @Shlohmo - Laid Out EP

The world of lo-fi and electronic trap is being mixed and mastered well by young Los Angeles homeboy Shlohmo. It all started when Shlohmo put out a rework of the highly popular Drake record Crew Love. His mellow dramatic trap mix caught the attention of Drake and The Weeknd who both supported and shared it. Under his family umbrella of Friends of Friends Records, Shlohmo started his own collective with good friend and innovative electronist Groundislava, called WEDIDIT Collective. Shlohmo had a big year last year and kicks off 2013 bigger than ever with a brand new EP and tour.

The Laid Out EP has just released worldwide and it is equal to or greater than his previous release Vacation EP. A consistant smooth vibe flows throughout the whole project. To start Tom Krell aka How To Dress Well features his live vocals on the opening track Don't Say No. I find this is the weakest track on the EP, put on only for collaboration purposes. On Out Of Hand Shlohmo gets back to his progressive transitions and epic builds. The way he filters his samples makes him most unique and in my top 5 artists to listen to out of Los Angeles right now. The last 30 seconds are broken down with a beautiful trumpet fading out. Later was the first song to be released via Soundcloud at the beginning of the year and is my personal favorite. The song builds and builds until a distorted vocal sample blasts through and begins harmonizing. First listening to this EP, you might feel like the songs and sounds are repetative, but in fact they couldn't be more different. Shlohmo does an excellent job of blend the Laid Out EP together, having you in a trance by the end. Put It could be one of the best crafted songs this young artist has ever made. But lets not get ahead of ourselves,
Shlohmo is young, wild and reckless and has a long career ahead of him.

Laid Out EP closes as it opened. Stuck in a trance, but by the end of Without, it is not possible to bob your head with amazement. Shlohmo will be performing live in Los Angeles next month at the Echoplex. See him for yourself and make the executive decision.

Justin Timberlake Presents The 20/20 Experience Live At The Palladium, Hollywood [REVIEW]

Tonight was a special occasion. Yes the Grammy's were entertaining, minus all of LL Cool J and Jay Z's awkward speech, but also Justin Timberlake made his official comeback to music. Justin graced the Grammy's with a special performance of his smash record Suit and Tie with Jay Z by his side, then Timberlake decided to release another new record Pusher Love Girl.
From one performance and event to another. just across town at the Palladium in Hollywood, thousands of fans waited patiently outside the venue until 10pm. Why you ask? Because tonight also marks the kickoff or official tour rehearsal for  Justins 20/20 Experience Tour. Some people even were in line as early as noon. Everyone poured inside and eagerly awaited until it was showtime. it was top to bottom jam packed and nobody minded one bit. Entering from the left of stage, Justins house band and backup singers known as The Tennesee Kids, which also accompanied him during his grammy performance. The lights go low and the lazers come out. Immediately his introduction is recognized and instead of a "no media" event, smartphones are out and filming. A familiar guitar riff starts the show. It's only right for Timberlake to start off with his first single ever as a solo artist, Like I Love You. From there the set transitions to Let Me Talk To You (Interlude) into another smash My Love. A sidenote; Justin Timberlake has made 2 albums in 10 years.
As the Timbaland produced record Cry Me A River starts to play, JT segways into the chorus of Juicy J's Bands Make Her Dance. After a few seconds he breaks into the original song, beatbox breakdown and all. A few times he took it back to his beatbox roots tonight. Following that, Justin proceeds to play a new song from his upcoming album called Pusher Love Girl; An adult story about a girl and a boy and drugs? Anyways, he falls back into the past with Senorita, playing the piano himself. By the end of that performance, he reminded me of a young Elton John.
The title track Future Sex Love songs and Rock Your Body seamlessly are sung back to back. A somewhat intermission took place, when Justin calls the Tennessee back up singers to the front of the stage. At this time they reincarnate the Jackson 5 to perform Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground). Rest in peace to the almighty Mr. Michael Jackson, but a new King of Pop has been declared and that is Justin Timberlake. A couple slow songs including Until The End Of Time seranade the crowd then the show ends abruptly. Justin says goodnight LA, and heads backstage. Everybody knows there is always an encore. And so it goes, Justin comes back on stage after no more than a couple minutes passing.
As a special treat, Suite and Tie is performed again in the same night in its entirety including Jay Z. Any Justin Timberlake fan knows that he forgot to perform his most publicized record Sexyback. So after Jay Z exits, Timbaland enters and they shut the Palladium down in Hollywood from there.
This experience tonight aka The 20/20 Experience was everything that a live show is missing. With a capacity of around 4,000 people, this intimate performance with Mr. Timberlake was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Next time he is back in Los Angeles, tells the crowd he is playing Staples Center (50,000+ capacity) Justin Timberlake is 2013's most prized possession in music.

Niki And The Dove At The El Rey Theatre Los Angeles [REVIEW]

January 28, 2013 was a mark in history for the indie electronic band Niki and the Dove playing their first ever Los Angeles full show to my knowledge. The band had a show previously the night before at a sold out show at this same location. The band was formed and surfaced in US in 2010 with their first effort The Drummer EP. Touring the world, Niki and the Dove take their two person show on the road through north america now.
To kick things off the Swedish duo was introduced by a haunting sample from The-Dream's Nikki pt.2. Over and over, "and it's all because of Nikki, its all because of Nikki..." Niki and her Dove appear from the darkness with neon flashing lights in hand. The Dove then manipulates the beat a little beat and on goes their set.
I was only introduced to them last year via Iggy Azaleas Back Seat record, which sampled the song Last Night. Their official debut album Instinct released May 14th of last year. Speaking of that song, the performance for Last Night included a trippy 5 minute interlude, where Niki screwed up her vocals to play a different role.
Performances for DJ Ease The Mind and their finale, a 10 minute version of their breakout single The Drummer, really impressed me. The set list included music from their first ep The Drummer, but predominantly Instinct. The show in its entirety was amazing especially for a Monday night. So if you have the chance purchase the tickets and experience another world with Niki And The Dove.

The Game + Jesus Piece + Deluxe Edition [REVIEW]

The Game puts a serious body of work together this time around on his fifth studio album Jesus Piece. Never judge a book by its previous cover I guess you could say. The RED album seemed unorganized and rushed. I wasn't expecting such a strong comeback from that, and that is exactly what happened on this album Jesus Piece. The features and production work so well together. Some people will say Game has changed his style yet again, calling him unoriginal. The new sounds and wordplays come with growth and maturity. The suggestive title is not to be neccessarily taken for religious significance, but it would have a Gangster theme of enjoying life, while also believing in God, Game says. Aside from all this the album is dedicated to his fallen brother Jevon Danell Taylor.
The intro Scared Now is an anthem, which gets the album started right with a end feature from Maybach Music rookie Meek Mill. Another Maybach Music feature comes from Rick Ross on the next record Ali Bomaye, another infectious anthem. Of course 2 Chainz co signs the song. The title track Jesus Piece is produced by Boi 1da and will be a movie if chosen as a single. Kanye West provides the hook, while Common goes head to head with Game. Flowing on Pray produced by Cool & Dre has to be my favorite track at the moment. A new artist that is taking the industry by surprise is JMSN who sings the hook of the song. The track is then blessed by J Cole who raps truth like always. Church from the look of it would be more soulful, but the complete opposite happens with a trapped out strip club anthem. Trey Songz caresses the hook and King Chip adds his two cents too. I think Kevin Hart runs his mouth a bit at end. All That (Lady) has soul that sounds like a young D Angelo, but is in fact Jeremih. This has potential to be a hit single. Features are ridiculous with a small infantry including Fabolous, Big Sean and Lil Wayne. Heavens Arms soudns like a 90s New York  Nas state of mind and that is exactly what it ends up being. Game transforms into Nas swaggin as Escobar would talking about parting the red sea in red loubittons. Name Me King starts off with Pusha T spitting a few bars.

Subconciously Game seems to be portraying the artists featured on each song. See No Evil has a ghostly sample, but the features are heavenly. Tank lends smooth vocals and Kendrick Lamar yet again impresses my mind. Shoutout to amazing songwriter Sam Hook for his work on this album including this record Celebration and others.Cant Get Right features Los Angeles local K Roosevelt on production and vocals. Always great talent coming out of Los Angeles. Game confesses his views of Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre getting together. Right off the bat Game pays homage to George Jefferson, while shouting out Lil Wayne at the same time. Superstar Jamie Foxx offers soul, where soul is needed produced by Jake One. Who is Elijah Blake. Mentor of No ID and Def Jam writer/artist. More references to Nas. In the middle of the Freedom record, Game answers a call from Birdman. He chats about how this is his last album before you signs a contract with Young Money Cash Money Records. He even shouts out James Harden LA representative. Again Kevin Hart appears and ends the album with a slap of sermon for the masses. The first single to surface with a visual Celebration ends the album. The deluxe edition includes what sounds like a MIKEWILLMADEIT beat, which features southern slayers Future and Young Jeezy. I imagine a hott unofficial visual for this. Blood Diamonds concludes Jesus Piece. This is another surprise project from 2012 that needs to be appreciated by purchase. Go out and support December 11, 2012.

Rihanna - Unapologetic [REVIEW]

It seems like since Rihanna first began her career in 2005, she has released a multi-platinum project and each time she surprises the world with her radio hits and infectious classics. Now Rihanna releases her seventh studio album via Roc NationUnapologetic, and at such a young age of 24, life looks extra bright for her career. To promote the album, herself has conceived the idea of a 777 tour. This includes a 7 date tour across 7 different countries. A most intimate experience, with shows in smaller venues and she is only traveling with journalists and friends.

This album Unapologetic has much depth and versatility from her previous albums. By now she is comfortable with herself as an artist to indulge in new styles and step outside her comfort zone. It works in her favor, with tracks like a Mike Will Made It produced track Power It Up, Rihanna spits a blazing flow with a chorus like,  "all I see is signs, all i see is dollar signs...throw it up throw it up, watch it all fall out". No doubt there will be an official remix for this record. Another record that was different in a good way was Numb which featured Eminem. The feeling when I first heard the record is indescribable  Oak and Pop Wansel, who are known as the team who produced Big Sean's Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay record, produce the Kanye and Connie Mitchell sampled hit. I didn't understand it until I heard several times. Her wordplay is impeccable on this one. A Kanye West sample from the Graduation album, Can't Tell Me Nothin' haunts the chorus. Eminem, of course rips apart the end of the track with a hypnotic story line.
The albums first single Diamonds is not only a fresh sound, but an easy multi-platinum single. Lets forget the fact that Rihanna is singing, but when you involve Benny Blanco with 13 number 1 singles at only 24 and So Sick producer Stargate, it becomes revolutionary. Sia lends her beautiful poetry to Rihanna and makes this an easy stand out record. Kanye West showed up on the official remix too. An interesting combination of producers involved on Unapologetic, but found David Guetta and Terius Nash (The-Dream) on two records together subliminally.

Both artists show up under the writing and production credits for the opening track Phresh Out The Runway and Right Now. The-Dream also co produces two separate records with Los Da Mystro, Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary and the media spectacle record featuring ex boyfriend Chris Brown. Both take on the portrayal and style of the late Michael Jackson throughout the song. "Ain't nobodies business, ain't nobodies business..." Jump explores the dubstep lifestyle, while borrowing the classic Ginuwine hook, written by Timbaland and Static Major, "Come on and lets do it, ride it, my pony, my saddle is waiting, come and jump on it." After comes a explosion of dirty dubstep and bass. Produced by Chase & Status, an English electronic production team and a surprise few bars from KY. What happens to be my favorite record from the album at the moment, is the Future featured Loveeeee Song. Future sings the thug out of him and autotunes just right. Powerful song produced by new producer to my knowledge Blue JuneUnapologetic offers an emotional insight into Rihanna's, but shows more vulnerability on records like What Now and Lost In Paradise

I think Rihanna is a very talented entertainer and artist and will always have support from her 26 million twitter fans and real life fans in the world. Go buy Unapologetic November 19, 2012.

Meek Mill x Dreams And Nightmares [REVIEW]

It was only a matter of time before young Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill was recognized for his unique style. His earlier street mixtapes including the Flamerz series were some of his most outstanding work. At the time Meek and his partner (producer Jahlil Beats) had a certain chemistry together that eventually would help influence this generations style. Known for his instantly gratifying, fast paced flows Meek Mill landed on boss man Rick Ross's radar and eventually would become signed to his new label Maybach Music Group. From there young Meek released his Dreamchasers series under the double M umbrella. What caught everyone off guard and most likely solidified his presence was his most recent mixtape was the sequel to Dreamchasers. Album included anthems like A1 featuring Kendrick Lamar and my personal favorite Racked Up Shawty featuring French Montana. For several days following its release Twitter was completely silent and in awe from the project.

Now Meek finally releases his debut project on Maybach Records, Dreams and Nightmares. Album is almost a year in the making, back in February when the album title was revealed via a vlog. Dreams and Nightmares is the title track for the intro to the album. Pleasant dreams are rapped for about the first 2 minutes, but from there Beat Bully pulls a 180 for the Nightmares portion of the record. Get ready to slowly break your neck. What it took for Meek to get to this point in his life was clearly a struggle and you can feel his pain throughout the song.

Black Metaphor laces the track In God We Trust, which is nothing special. Consistant record where Meek goes all the way with no feature. He can do that. His energy zones you. Young And Gettin It is the third single from the album and features Texas hook prince Kirko Bangz with the auto tune influence. Even Meek gets juicy with the sound. Jahlil Beats shows versatility in his production. Traumatized immediately sounds of something different and shows promise. Come to find the beat is composed by grammy award winning producer Boi-1da. Have to replay this one real quick.

Rick Ross makes a few appearances on his young proteges debut album. Believe It would be the first of three. Nothing less of a grunge street album produced by Young Shun. This next song feels like some serious power moves were made. Maybach Curtains produced by DJ Infamous features Nas, John Legend and Rick Ross. I almost want to say this record originally owned by Rick Ross, but was maybe passed down the legacy. Nas stands out like always. Amen was the first single released back in June. Frito Lay seems to be a hot line amongst the crew by the way. Drake lends his super star shine and Jeremiah completes the song with background vocals. Key Wane and Jahlil Beats bring us to church with this one.

Young Kings points out all of Meek Mill's latest riches. His life has changed drastically in a public sense since he signed on with music and business mogul Rick Ross. Its only right for him to write about and expand on his luxurious lifestyle. Lee Major fits the beat with the flow perfect. High pitched sounds from Trey Songz speak on Lay Up. Songz has always stood out with his different sound and flow and its prominent on this future single produced by another award winning producer Kane Beatz. Maybach Music is in the building with another feature from Rick Ross as well as Wale. Tony Story Pt. 2 leaked over the summer and was overlooked, but second time around this Boi-1da beat resonates with me instantly.

Who Your Around is another potential single. Somehow Mary J Blige keeps making the cut on all of these young and hungry artist debut projects ergo Kendrick Lamar good kid m.A.A.d city. I am not mad at her. She is already in the hip hop hall of fame. Throughout Dreams and Nightmares Meek Mill contrasts the positive dreams and strengths that he has with his hardest times in life. Polo And Shell Tops is the Nightmare part of the previous song. At times the album blends together well, but is rudely interrupted with radio jams and fillers. Cardiak is a hot producer with a hot beat on Polo And Shell Tops

Another Jahlil Beats production featuring artist Louie V. This tempo of the track is something different from what a Jahlil beat sounds like. Interesting piano riffs and eerie echoes keep me interested. To end the album Real Niggas Come First recognizes what is really important to Meek Mill. That is being true to himself and the music. The album Dreams And Nightmares is an easy listen. I feel like the idea and image of the album are perfect, but wasn't necessarily executed as well as it could have been. For being a mainstream rap album it serves the community well.

-Burn is included on the Deluxe Version of the album-

Kendrick Lamar x good kid m.A.A.d city [REVIEW]

Leaking earlier tonight was Kendrick Lamar's official studio album. good kid m.A.A.d city isn't just an album rather a short film by the young poet Kendrick Lamar. His first two efforts (Overly Dedicated & Section .80) had great success and crowned Kendrick the new king of the Compton and the west coast. Moving on, the guest list that was provided is nothing to take lightly. Jay Rock was an unexpected feature on Money Trees produced by DJ Dahi. That would be the only TDE music feature on the track list. Drake co writes the track Poetic Justice produced by LA native Scoop Deville. Something tells me this will serve as a single very soon. with a powerful sound/movie clip at the end of it's life. On the track good kid Pharrell Williams composes and provides choral vocals. Another surprise was hearing MC Eiht on the street infused record m.A.A.d city. The hook will take over mind. Production provided by the next level sounds of THC and co production by Sounwav and Terrace Martin. Besides all of that m.A.A.d city has two lives transitioning one story to another. K dot introduces a new artist to my knowledge named Anna Wise from the group Sonnymoons. She is definitely Next In Show on the track Real produced by LA native Terrace Martin

Kendrick has kept his original storytelling recipe as he has had from the beginning of his career. But don't get it confused, this album good kid m.A.A.d city will sound nothing like his previous projects. The tone of the album controls a steady pace and has you biting your nails at the end of each song. Throughout the album there are conversations at the beginning and ends of records. Within the music is a short film inspired by Kendrick Lamar's life and style. Seamless mixing by resident engineer Ali solidifies the album as a classic in my world. Tracks like Backseat Freestyle produced by Hit-Boy keep the album sounding fresh and innovative. Classic records are only as classic as their producers. Almost every record presents a different producer, but still maintains a consistent vibe throughout. His first summer single was The Recipe, which featured Dr. Dre is included as a bonus track.
The second single known as Swimming Pools (Drank) is included on the official album track list, but as an extended version. Sing About Me is produced by Skhye Hutch, SounWav and transitions to the track I'm Dying Of Thirst produced by Like of Pac Div. This whole album is just as entertaining and exciting as any major movie out in theaters now. Compton produced by Just Blaze completes the original album and features mentor to music Dr. Dre. After hearing and watching the film good kid m.A.A.d city by Kendrick Lamar, I feel enlightened and inspired. By the end I discovered that the story was told in reverse. So far my favorite track is The Art of Peer Pressure. Album releases October 22, 2012 walk, run, click to buy this album. I have no problem buying 2 copies. This could serve as my catcher in the rye it's that classic. #nextinshow

MellowHype x TrashTalk x Release Party For Numbers / 119[AVAILABLE NOW]

Today is a big day for the Odd Future collective. First it marks the day for the new release of MellowHype's new project Numbers, but also is the release of OF's first signee band Trash Talk's 4th studio album release 119
To celebrate the family threw an afternoon party which conveniently was scheduled to start at 1:19pm. Still unclear as to the significance of 119, but I'm sure it's deep.
The album 119, is a definite cop. I have never been into hardcore, but Trash Talk seems to understand me. Odd Future bosses Tyler, The Creator and Hodgy Beats make a guest appearance, which fits nice on Blossom & Burn. Lots of energy is brought to you by the band. In just over 20 minutes, 119 is an easy and entertaining listen.
MellowHype also released their newest and long awaited project Numbers. Hodgy Beats fills up the records with catchy hooks and down to earth raps. Another artist who's words I can relate to. Numbers also includes features from Frank Ocean, Mike G and Earl Sweatshirt. Tyler also guest produces on the downtempo record 666. The party was held in the back of Odd Futures highly successful flagship shop on Fairfax in Los Angeles. BBQ was included and party favors were provided. Go support these young ARTist now.  Everyone was #mellowhigh
