Next In Show Presents An Exclusive Interview With Tomas Barfod [READ]

Electronic and Instrumental melodies have come strong this year. The Los Angeles music scene seems to have embraced its massive underground electro-trap-dub movement with open arms. Tomas Barfod is a musician who just happens to create dark easy listening music. Being a part of the Friends of Friends family and record label, Tomas is among the next generation of djs in music and production. Next In Show linked up with Tomas Barfod to talk about his latest project The November Skies Remix EP, as well as how he started his music career and more.

Next In Show Presents An Interview With Tomas Barfod

What does music mean to you?
Pretty much everything, I have been playing drums since I was 10 and living from making music the last 10 years, so music has always been a big part of my life for almost forever.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a little fishing town south of Copenhagen, usually not a particular musical place, but my generation pick up the music, so when I lived there was plenty of stuff going. From school class alone we are two that are doing music professionally now.

How did you get involved in live instrumental music?
Since I was 10, my farther bought at drum kit for me for Xmas, and since then I have been playing. At some point that turned into playing concert with bands - and earning a bit money on the side in high school.

When did you transition from playing the drums to electronic sounds?
When I was around 20 I started getting interested in electronic music, like drum n bass and trance, that later became house and techno, at some point I just said fuck I wanna be a dj and producer, and a couple of years after I started playing and producing.

If you had to choose 3 albums to listen to for the rest of your life, what would they be?

That's a tough one. Michael Meyers fabric mix 13, air: noon safari, Michael Jackson: thriller

How did you make your decision to sign with the newly founded Friends Of Friends Music Label?
It was kind of randomly...leeor the founder wrote me a message over MySpace back when it was still kind active. Since then we have been in contact, but when I decided to move to LA for a while it made sense to work closer with them. I'm so happy it happened because its one of the best labels I have been working with. So dedicated to the music.

What do you think of your labelmates Shlohmo and Groundislavas WeDiDItCollective movement?
I think it's awesome, I like when producers work together and support each other. Same thing that's good about FOF, everybody is remixing and helping each other.

Salton Sea is your latest project. Explain the concept behind the California landmark title?
I have been tripping over abandoned places for a while, saving pictures from empty offices of Detroit, shut down  amusement parks and hotels from al over the world. So It made sense to go to Salton sea for inspiration for the album.

Just recently you released a remix project to November Skies. How did you bring together all of those upcoming DJs and producers for the EP?
Some are not upcoming others are pretty unknown, but I'm excited over how good all remixes are. All of them turned it into something unique. Some of them was approached by my label, but a lot where people who I really respected and wanted to work with.

How has your music changed from your first album ever recorded, to present day?
A lot. My first album was a an underground house project that got signed to a major label. And 6 months after we founded it, we suddenly hat this big system behind us, so we started to make vocal house, and made a few hits Europe. So even tho I still use vocals on my tracks, I have come a long way since then.

Do you have any major new years resolutions that you would like to try and accomplish?
I always have big plans for the future.

What keeps you moving forward towards your dreams?

I have had this drive since I started to make music, I think I comes from loving my job so much, and it means that I work really hard on my goal, which is to be happy and to make a difference as a musician. In general that have meant that I have been living well from my hobby the last many years.

Next In Show x Gilbere Forte #throwbackinterview

Fresh off of tour, and busy collaborating with pretty much everyone in the music business, Gilbere Forte doesn't seem like he slowing down anytime soon. His 'Some Dreams Never Sleep EP"album, which released in October, gives you a taste of what you can expect the future of hip hop to sound. A couple months ago. Our close friends and affiliates over at 2WhiteGirlz.com featured the mixtape, and we were immediately in awe. Thanks to @JaimLou and @denigma for making this happen for us.

Next In Show Presents An Exclusive Interview
With Gilbere Forte.

Your on Tour now. Is this your first tour? How is it going?

The tour was amazing! Yes, its my first tour run. I had a great time traveling to cities i never fathom reaching and meeting all my fans. It was madd inspirational being able to talk to them directly and the stories they had about my tunes.

How do you compare your rap to others from Philly?

I can't compare my raps to anyone. Being from Philly you can either sound like everyone in the city or you can be you. I feel like its different for me because i was born in Flint, MI so i'll always have my midwest influence. Its a lot of talent in philly so its exciting to see the new generation create new flows, styles, and wordplay.

Is there anyone from Philadelphia that you would like to work with?

I would love to work with The Roots.

Your music sounds original but must come from somewhere. Who do you get musical inspiration  from?

A lot of my inspirations date back to the midwest ; twista, kanye, and 8ball & MJG. But since birth, i was also raised on artist like Sade, Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, so i get a lot inspiration from them as well.

What is the message in your music?

To believe in thee impossible and dream first, think later.

Do you see yourself signing to a Major Label or is Independent the route you will stick with?

I think i can win in both avenues. I think where i am in my career right now is more independent focus. So i'm open for conversation down the line but will see what happens.

Your album Some Dreams Never Sleep is Presented by TheHundreds. What is your relation with the brand?

I grew up in streetwear and it was a dream to work with a brand like TheHundreds. Its honesty and connection to the culture that they represent, and thats what i stand for.

What are the barriers you see in the music industry that you say would cause someone to not succeed?

Believing in your own HYPE. I'd say its a gift and curse. Youre proud of your accomplishments, but if gets the most of you to where it affects the music its a problem.

Since becoming more well known what are some of the negative influences you have to stay away from?

I'm a studio rat, some times i don't like to go out. lol But in this game you have to be accessible, so as they would say, "I'm OUTCHEA."

How is a day in the studio with you?

Hmm.. I'd say tons of laughter, a television in the background on mute, me being barefoot eating something healthy and great music in the air.

What is your schedule like for 2012?

I am releasing my Debut Independent Album top of the year.  I have a few tours set up, I'll be performing at WMC/ULTRA, and SXSW is going to be awesome! haha can't wait. Um, so much fun is on deck. All i can tell you.

Do you believe in the theory of 2012 being the end of the world?

If you listen to my entire catalog from start to finish you'll see what i been prepping you for.

Where do you see hip hop in 3 years? How are you a part of it?

HipHop will forever evolve. I think it's entering the stage of it being fun again. Its not about punchlines, or how much coke you got, or how many stacks you have. lol Its going to be on some next level "Kid N Play" shit.

I appreciate you taking the time to interview with us. Good luck on tour and in your career from Next In Show.

Thank you and good bless you guys for choosing me!

Peace

Next In Show Presents An Interview With Chris Miles (13 Year Old Rap Phenom) [READ]

It's not everyday you find unique talent, but that is exactly what I did when I discovered Chris Miles. He is wise upon his years for being only 13. "Growing up in Long Island is like living in another country", he says. Music is his motive and when he received over 1 million views for his viral single Dial Tone, it doesn't seem he will be losing that motivation anytime soon. Check out our exclusive interview with Young Chris Miles.

Chris Miles x Next In Show Interview

When did you realize you had such a talent for music?

I first realized I had talent for music when I noticed people were starting to become more and more impressed with the music that I posted online.

What is it like growing up in Long Island? I hear its like it's own country?

It's awesome! Long Island is full of musicians so I basically fit right in. Also, I think it's like it's own country because everything is different out here. (food, people, etc.)

Do you have any favorite west coast artists on your iPod right now?

One of my favorite west coasts artists at the moment is Kendrick Lamar. His flow, lyrics, and delivery never cease amaze me. You can tell he has a true passion for music.

What does your family think about you pursuing a career in music?

Everybody in my family encourages me to pursue my dream and career in music, mostly my dad, considering the fact he's a musician himself. At first my mom was a bit shady about the whole thing but she eventually adjusted.

Do you attend public school?

At the moment I do attend a public school.

Besides music, what do you turn to in your free time?

Besides music,I usually hang out with friends, relax, or watch T.V., but most of my time is dedicated to music.

I'm not comparing you whatsoever, but what are your thoughts about Justin Bieber and his worldwide success at such a young age?

Justin is a talented artist and seems like a cool person. Hopefully, one day I can achieve success off my music like he's done.

Your most viral record/video was for Dial Tone, which made it to worldstarhiphop.com with over 1 million views. How do you feel about that?

Truthfully, I'm amazed. I never would of thought that ANY of my songs would get the amount of popularity "Dial Tone" did. Especially that quick.
What is next for Young Chris Miles?

Who knows? The key to success is to expect the unexpected. I'm just hoping my music leads me somewhere great...

What has been your greatest accomplishment so far?

My greatest accomplishment so far would have to be gaining my fans. My fans are everything to me, without them I wouldn't be where I am today. The least I could do for them is give them more music to put on their iPods.

Thanks Chris Miles. Your Next In Show.

Next In Show Presents An Exclusive Interview With Jhene Aiko [Read]

It's a new day and with that I bring to you a brand new Interview featuring the soulful, sexy diva Jhene Aiko. You may have heard of her on recent records like Ab-Soul's Terrorist Threats and Casey Veggies Life & Rhymes. But what you haven't heard is the story behind the voice. I was lucky enough to get to talk with Miss Jhene recently. We talk about life, struggle and her upcoming album Souled Out. Get familiar with a superstar who is next in show, Jhene Aiko.

Next In Show Presents Jhene Aiko

Your name is so unique and beautiful. Its pronounce Jhene Aiko. What is your background?

Japanese x African American x Native American with parts of some other stuff, but we will stick with those three for now.

What does your family think about your music career?

They are very supportive. I grew up in a family where I am the youngest of five. By the time I was 4 my oldest siblings were already going on auditions and singing and doing videos.

Are any of them involved in music?

Yes my sister was always involved in entertainment things like singing and dancing. My dad was always into writing songs and singing. My first house that I grew up in, he had converted the garage into a studio. Even though I was really young, it was normal to be around these types of things and these types of people.
Were you ever  signed to TDE Records? How did the hottest track out right now Terrorist Threats come about?

No it was actually TUG. I work closely with TDE, my management company now has brought me even closer. We have known each other for a while now. We are doing the same things and I feel we have the same integrity. Terrorist Threats happened because Ab-Soul called me up and said I need you on this song. It was a couple of songs actually he needed me to do. So I came in to do that. Ab-Soul is one of my favorite rappers of all time. He is amazing to me. He's a genius. I was more than happy to contribute in that way. He knew what he wanted me to say on the records, he already had it written out. I want to be down because I believe in him as an artist and his message.

That's amazing. I will be at the Ab-Soul show in LA on the 15th. Will you be there?

I'm definitely going to be there

You work with one of my favorite production teams Fisticuffs. They recently produced the track 3:16am which you did a short teaser for. Way to build that buzz. How did you originally link up with them?

Video is coming soon. That came about because I was signed with Sony/Epic and they usually place me with producers. I had worked with them and then kept working with them throughout my career. Sometimes I wouldn't even know it was there track. When we finally sat down and I realized I had already written a song to their track, I knew then that I wanted them to be my main producers because we just worked so well together. We started creating stuff together from scratch and thats when I was like "You guys are my team."

Your music deals with real life emotions and everyday struggles. What is the greatest obstacle you have overcome?

I think that trying to find a balance of being a mom and doing what I'm doing or trying to do has been- I wouldn't say it's really like a hard struggle but it's something definitely like everyday is a work in progress. I'm a mom, you know, I don't have a babysitter or anything like that. I have a great family and friends that help out when they can, but we are all out here trying to do our thing, surviving.

I'm always looking for new inspiration. Where do you turn to get inspired mainly?

It doesn't take much. Im going through something everyday so I write based off of how I'm feeling. I write for myself to help get through things, so I'm always inspired. Whether I'm happy or sad, or angree, there is always something to pull from.

I have worked with a rapper named Ryshon Jones from Philadelphia. He wrote and dedicated a song to you called Letter To Jhene Aiko. Have you heard it? What is your response.

Yeah I heard it. I was flattered. I think thats dope. Not only because its a song directed towards me, but it was a good song too. So I was like wow, I was taken back a little like wow.

Listen to an excerpt of interview in Ryshon Jones recent visual for Letter To Jhene

It's official, your signed to Atrium Records, which was founded by superproducer No I.D. a subdivision of Def Jam Records. Congratulations.

 Thank you.

What do you think of major record label expectations?

I don't think of them. I think that it's a new time in music and labels are aware of artists like myself to have their foundation already built, and I think they're respecting it more. I think they appreciate it to because they don't have to work as hard. They are coming into situations now where we already have our own fanbase. The labels kind of fall in line with that. There's still the politics and stuff like that, but I think there is a shift in how labels are dealing with everything now.

Your upcoming album Souled Out is an interesting metaphor but seems to serve as a double meaning. Can you explain the idea behind it?

Well first it's a follow up to my debut project Sailing Souls (Sailing Souls is about the free spirit; sailing your soul instead of selling it) Being free rather than having a price. Souled Out is what happens after you Sail your Soul. Your Souled Out and completely free. And your Soul is on an infinite free ride. Souled Out will have a lot of my soul poured out into each track, almost to the point where it's like "I might not be around for the end of this", but I'm writing these songs because it's that important to me to really share this and put a lot into each song.

What is the difference between your debut project Sailing Souls and your new project Souled Out?

It's like Sailing Souls times 10. On this album I'm going to be even more personal. Even more heartfelt. The songs about life are going to be even more. Everything will be more. I have some songs on there that are going to be dark, really dark. Previously I sort of took it easy with Sailing Souls. On Souled Out I'm going to really show off what I'm thinking about.

It's all about growth.

Exactly. Hopefully it's not too different for the people that are in love with Sailing Souls. Because in the end it's from ME. It's me being myself. A year has gone by since then and a lot has happened and I think I definitely have grown. So that is what is expected with Souled Out

What are your playing on your iPod right now?

On my iPod I am playing Ab-Soul (Control System), Kid Cudi (WZRD) and John Mayer Born And Raised. Those are my top 3 in rotation. Nothing has been able to take me off of those as of yet.

I heard a little bit of Born And Raised. A bit to country for me.

It is, but if your a John Mayer fan it's all about his stories. If he was a rapper, he would have some of the craziest bars because his storytelling ability, the way he is with words is just amazing to me. I love everything about John Mayer. To me he is a true musician. It's not too country.

Besides your highly highly anticipated debut album, what upcoming events or projects do you have coming up that your excited about?

Right now I'm really focused on writing and finishing Souled Out. I am just going with the flow. I'm excited about everything. I got upcoming shows that I will let everybody know about through my twitter and my website. I'm just a random person. Sometimes I might just drop a snippet of a new song here and there while people wait.

Everybodies path is different. What have you lived by to help keep you motivated and working towards your goals?

I truly believe in taking the time to understand and to love yourself and really find out who you are. I feel like once you do that, you can do anything. I think it's important to be honest with yourself and take time to really understand and look at life with an open mind. Treat yourself right. All in all just be led by love.

Thanks for your time Jhene. You are Next In Show.

Next In Show Presents An Interview With C-SAN
By @ihate_chris

Are you a Los Angeles native?

Yes born and raised.

Explain the name C-SAN?

Nick name given to members of my family..my last name is Sanford and by the time i got to high school my older cousins were known by similar names like (Mike San) etc so its just my real name abbreviated.

What music influenced you growing up?

Growing up it was basically ALL WESTCOAST Music like xzibit, dre, etc but i also listened to Biggie growing up. Didn't get into other genres or to many other artist until high school.

Besides music, what else are you passionate about?

Family, sports, knowledge, and that's about it. Learning more and more is something i strive to do everyday.

Although the Los Angeles music community seems big, its quite small in reality.

WAY SMALLER THAN YOU THINK. 75% of the "Scene" has personal relationships with each other. More than just music.

What is your involvement with local talent such as Overdoz & Casey Veggies?

I have worked with pretty much all local talent. Dom, Casey, Skeme, Kendrick, Overdoz, H.O.P.E, Iman Omari, Bad Lucc, there is not really more i can work with lol. But as far as overdoz and Casey those are very personal relationships. Overdoz I have been friends with some members since pre school and I have been with them every step of the way. Casey is like my little brother. We connected through music but the relationship is way deeper. When you are close with someones family it goes deeper than just music.

What music is being played in heavy rotation on your iPod at the moment?

Ab Soul, a lot of 70's funk and soul, J Cole, Wale, and Jay-z right now.

Who is someone alive or dead that you really want to collaborate with?

Ab Soul, Joe Budden, and that's really it. J Cole maybe. I don't have the desire to work with many people. I can be a fan and not want to work with them. That's not saying I'm not down to but i really don't desire to work with people that I'm not already working with.

Last week at Coachella during Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's set, they infamous Tupac hologram made another special appearance. What are your thoughts on bringing back fallen artists and in a sense "exploiting" them?

I saw it live on the YouTube stream and i was tripping out. In shock for at least 5 minutes before i could form an opinion. I don't know how to feel about that shit. It was creepy to me honestly.

As an artist being independent is becoming the trend.
What do you think about being independent vs. signing to a major label?

Depends on the vision you have for your career or what your career needs. People need to really understand what they do music for and what they want out of it. Some belong independent some belong signing with a major. each situation is different no two routes are the same in this business.

What project are you currently working on now?

I just put out dreams & Reality and will continue to push that, but I'm always working and progressing.

What is the motto you live by everyday?

Make every day count and APPRECIATE LIFE!

Thanks for your time Chris. See you at the top!

Next In Show Presents An Exclusive Interview With Cjhrtbrkr

Earlier this year I met a singer/model/personality that goes by the stage name Cjhrtbrkr. She is fairly new to the performing, but will be a veteran by the end of the year. The host of her own radio show, she knows a thing or two about music and is a character to listen to. This Canadian from Windsor, Ontario is ready to take on the world and Next In Show is proud to be her first interview. Read below to find out the complexion of Christina aka Cjhrtbrkr.

Next In Show Presents Cjhrtbrkr

Living in Ontario Canada, what is the music scene like over there?

Well, we're kind of lucky because we have a whole bunch of bars that many indi bands to go play at, but then, at the same time we've had some World named DJS (Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Deep Dish) at the clubs here and also hip hop artists like Royce da 59, 36 Mafia, Drizzy come through showing my city Windsor LOVE...The Caesars Palace here too, so big things are always poppin' . See how I'm avoiding the real question here? haha Although Windsor's music scene is kind of small , we're all kinda out here trying to make it a difference but  I'm really trying lol
The support for Hip Hop music in Windsor is like the support for the Detroit Lions Footbal team..The people here are going to be there for you when you're doing good! S/O to the few holding it down from the get go... Much love!

Does music run in your family?

Yes, it does actually! My cousin MIKE J, he is from Windsor, Ontario and has been doing music for about 9-10 years now. I've been to a million of his shows until I started performing at them this year. He's done tracks with Bizarre from D12, MC HUSH and opened a few big shows here for Carl Wolf and Choclair. Then there's my cousin Jimmy, he's been rapping about some real SH*T and will be out with his tracks soon. I also have a 3rd cousin named Christine, but she's actually my 3rd cousin because the other two are my 1st. LOL Anyways, she went to Lebanon and tried out for a show over there; similar to American Idol but it's called, "Star Academy" and she did well on that.
Anyone else?? No, I don't think so!

I have listened in on the radio show you host and I have to say, you're as funny as you are beautiful. How did the radio show come about?

Aww, thank you! :) hehe *school girl laugh* Well, Needle and I officially met over the summer before a 36 Mafia concert and I had tennis raquettes in the back of my car and he wanted to take them and play tennis in the parking lot and I said " Hell No!" because I thought it was a dangerous idea, lolololol, we networked from there, we spoke, met, I did a few events with him here in Windsor and then he asked me to be his co host on the radio show, I said "sure", then we did the show together for about 4 months then I took the last 2 months off from the show because of school and now I'm just checking out some new opportunities and going with the flow. Will I go back to the radio anytime soon? I don't have a clue.

Besides perfecting your craft, who else do you listen to?

Honestly, I go on this website jango.com and I let the music play. I love everything, especially songs with meaningful lyrics (R.I.P Whitney Houston). I can listen to country, house, pop, rock, you name it... I'm into it. I listen to the radio alot too! Alot of people I'm around are always surprised about how many songs I know. But on the real deal when I'm in my car, I'm bumping Hip Hop and R&B You ready for the list? Pretty much everybody in the ENTIRE Game. They all have great records that I listen to... BUT... I have to admit that I listen to alot of Drake. He is everywhere. All his songs [to me] are relatable and catchy. That's our Boy in Canada. OVOXO
My fav tune right now that I hear in my car is by Beyonce-Dance 4 U

but anyways Here's the list. I'll be missing some but ...OK...

She's still killin it and she's my mom's age too...Damn

But truly, I listen to everybody. I'm more into the lyrics than anything.

They call you CJ the Heartbreaker. How many hearts have you broken?

Im pretty sure they are doing great though, have girlfriends and some maybe even kids now, haha  but let me tell you... What goes around comes around! I seen this question coming... LOL I'm sure I've broken a few hearts in my day only  because I was not ready to be in love! What can ya do?  So the name CJ Heartbreaker comes from hearts I've "broken" and the ones who broke mine. It only makes sense and when you get to hear #Burnafterhearing, there will be a better understanding of who I am as an artist.

In my opinion before Drake, Canada wasn't really relevant in the music scene. Who are some og canadians that should be in everyone's playlist?

Drizzy, holds it down for Canada, eh?  But there are alot of artist in different genres doing their thing from Canada.
isn't famous at all, I don't even #beliber I know who that is!... Jokes* but don't forget about Celine Dion, Chantal Kreviazuk, Alanis Morissette, Our Lady of Peace, Neverending White Lights, Dallas Green from Alexis on Fire, Avril, Metric, Feist, Lights, Swollen Members, Karl Wolf, Kardinal Offishall. I'm probably missing so many more... But that's only just a few names of Canadian Artist that have done well for themselves in my opinion. Research some :) Oh wait, can't forget about Nickleback (and I think they have awesome music videos concepts  #justsaying )
Nelly Furtado just came out with a new song #biggerisbetter. She's def an OG. The Weeknd gets love all over the map. Justin Bieber

You always step out of the box with fashion. Where does your inspiration come from?

I feel like my fashion comes out 3-6 months earlier than the trend comes out, it's true though and the same goes for my hair cuts, lol. I just do what I want, wear what I want, because all I know is that it's an expression of myself and how I'm feeling at that given moment. Honestly, I change clothes sometimes 2-3 times depending on the day. I have 3 types of clothes. 1. Gym clothes 2. Black clothes for work 3. Attitude clothes that show my personality when I go out. I'll add that, I really enjoy art, design and any form of expression, which makes sense why fashion and music  are definietly a good combo. So to answer your question, my inspiration comes from within.

What music do you have on your iPod right now?

To tell you the truth. I listen to 90% instrumentals on my ipod.
But if I were to take a shuffle through... I'd say Drake has the most songs, I listen to WTT, JCole, The Weeknd, Eminem and random oldie songs that I like.

What can we look forward to for this summer from you?

My website up, Management, doing bigger shows and performing for more people.

What is the motto you live by?

Tomorrow is a new day! YOLO works too! LOL
